So what are the most significant changes?
1. Production has shrunk, significantly fewer vehicles are produced, stocks are dwindling. In 2020, we saw a decline in new car production in Europe of more than 23%, representing more than 3 million vehicles from the production line. The emphasis is on ecology and safety, and this is also hampering the faster recovery of the car industry, the more environmentally friendly and intelligent cars are, the greater the pressure on microchips, which have unfortunately become a very scarce commodity. Analysts estimate that we will get to the pre-crisis numbers in the volume of vehicle production in 2 years at the earliest. In addition to the lack of factory employees and limited staff capacity, which caused a forced reduction in production volumes, the carmakers also voluntarily reduced production due to uncertainty about future demand. They stopped producing vehicles for stock and focus mainly on the production of vehicles to order. In addition to the above-mentioned microchips, the supply of spare parts or components for vehicles for their completion is also an increasing problem.
2. Vehicle prices are skyrocketing. Both new and used. Since the end of 2020, it has been possible to observe price increases in almost all sectors of the economy, with the exception of the automotive industry. The rising price of new vehicles is more or less a natural phenomenon, vehicles are becoming more and more smart, they contain expensive assistance systems, safety systems and, thanks to emission standards, they must be increasingly environmentally friendly. All these factors affect their price growth. While, for example, the price of the 3rd generation Škoda Octavia started at 13,990 EUR with VAT, the 4th generation of this model is up to 17,900 EUR. The reason for the increase in the prices of used vehicles was simply the increased demand for their purchase. When in the past there were 10 applicants for 1 vehicle, today there are 40. So why not raise the price when you are almost sure that one of the applicants will be willing to pay a higher amount.
3. The delivery of vehicles has been rapidly extended. It may even happen that the carmaker cancels your order completely and simply does not deliver the vehicle. This is a tribute to the reality and image of today. People have not changed in their patience and everyone needs everything now and without waiting. However, the production and delivery of a new vehicle has been extended 2 to 3 times compared to 2019. You can safely wait 6 or 8 months for a new vehicle. The carmakers have limited capacities and explicitly choose who they prefer in the delivery and to whom they will be willing to produce the vehicle at all.
And these are the mentioned facts that we have been counting on. The demand for rent, whether ad hoc short-term for a weekend or a week, or long-term for several months or a year, has grown greatly.
